Clairvoyance refers to an extrasensory perception, such as gaining knowledge through other-than-ordinary means. In French, clairvoyance means “clear seeing”, which relates to an individual’s gift for knowing information that is not known to others.
When most people think of clairvoyance they imagine someone who is able to see the future or predict what’s about to happen. But there is actually quite a bit more involved in the practice of clairvoyance. Below, we discuss 5 facts about clairvoyance you probably didn’t know.
5 Facts about Clairvoyance
1. Clairvoyance Has Deep Scientific History
Clairvoyance is often associated with religious or spiritual practices, but it has a deep history in science and medicine. In the 1780’s, Marquis de Puységur , a follower of Franz Anton Mesmer, observed behaviors related to clairvoyance. It was Puységur who discovered “experimental somnambulism”, which is now called hypnosis. During hypnosis, Puységur observed patients demonstrating telepathic and clairvoyant abilities.
2. Governments Have Studied Clairvoyance
In the late nineteenth and early twentieth century’s, governments began studying clairvoyance as one of several phenomena of interest to parapsychologists. The first scientific study was conducted by Britain’s Society for Psychical Research (SPR). From the 1930’s to the 1950’s, many experiments and studies were conducted by J.B. Rhine, one of the most well known parapsychologists of the time. Then, in the 1970’s, the U.S. government funded a “remote viewing project” to investigate whether clairvoyance could be used as a means of acquiring covert information from enemy forces. These studies last through the 1990’s.
3. Clairvoyance and Telepathy are NOT the Same Thing
People often confuse clairvoyance and telepathy, but they are distinct gifts. With clairvoyance, the individual derives information from the external physical forces. With telepathy, the information is gained from someone else’s mind.
4. There are Three Categories of Clairvoyance
Clairvoyance is divided into three main categories:
- Precognition: The ability to see events before they happen.
- Spontaneous: The ability to see an event happening, even if it is far away.
- Retrocognition: The ability to see events of the past.
5. Clairvoyance Can be a Spiritual Practice
While the scientific community largely disagrees on the true nature and applicability of clairvoyance, there are many spiritual practitioners and religions that believe clairvoyance is a very real and useful gift. Some faiths even believe that clairvoyance and other psychic abilities are dormant in most humans, and can be reawakened through spiritual practices like yoga or meditation.
